Salvador

History

Founded on March 29, 1549, Salvador was the first capital of Brazil, and it remained so for 214 years (1549-1763).
The Bahia de Todos os Santos was known by the Portuguese explorers since 1501; its strategic location in the Brazilian coast, connected the routes Portugal - Brazil - Africa – Asia, and the equidistance between the North and South regions of Brazil, as well as the required conditions for safe shelter and the correct navigation of the ships. All of this led to the decision of choosing this ideal location to construct Brazil’s first capital.
The colonial architecture of Salvador is of great importance for its history. It has been prized with the title of “World History and Artistic Heritage” by the United Nations.

Food
The food from Bahia is one of the more diverse and rich ones in all of the world. Its origin is a mix between African, Portuguese, and native indians way of cooking.    It is typically well elaborated, smells great, spicy, and tasty. The African heritage is predominant, in using the palm oil in order to color and give flavor to the seafood and is a main ingredient in the famous moquecas, vatapá and caruru dishes. Foods that come from the manioc root derive from the native indians day to day cooking.
At each corner one can find patties such as the acarajé, abará, and the different sweet patties, all served by the Baianas traditionally dressed in their long white skirts, a turban and many necklaces.
The caruru is one of the most traditional dishes of the Bahia cuisine. Isprepared with okra, dry shrimp, ginger, cashew nuts, peanuts, various spices, palm oil, and coconut milk.
